The National Healthy Schools Programme promoted the link between good health, behaviour and achievement; it was about creating healthier, happier children and young people who do better in learning and life.

Did you know that 99% of Southampton schools have achieved Healthy Schools Status and a number are already engaged in the next phase – to “plan, do and review” health and well-being improvements for children and young people? This is a great achievement and is the result of the hard work and dedication of schools, Southampton Healthy Schools Team and local partners/stakeholders.

The coalition government has stated its continuing commitment to Healthy Schools as a means to improve the health and wellbeing of children and young people. Therefore, the good news (and key message) is that Healthy Schools is continuing! However, the programme will continue in a different format, be less reliant on National structure, be driven by local priorities and has been subject to the Government’s Spending Review. As of April 2011, Central Government funding and support for this programme ceased and the programme is now “schools-led”.

Locally, there have also been a number of changes (including to Southampton Healthy Schools Team) but local support for schools is still available.
